Genesis 32:22-32, Jacob Wrestles with God

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then the man said, ‘You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.’
— Genesis 32:28

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, August 17, 2020

by R. M. Fergus, Clergy Stuff

New name, new life. It happens all over in the Bible. Abram and Sarai become Abraham and Sarah. Jacob becomes Israel. Simon becomes Peter. We all have different chapters in our lifelong walk with God. Not all of them come with name changes, not all of them are so mystical as wrestling with a mysterious man all night long and having him proclaim that we have striven with God. But new paths are always exciting opportunities to dig deeper into faith, and rely more completely on the God who calls us, equips us, and sustains us. And in the end, we are all named beloved children of God, and that’s the most beautiful name of all.

Gracious God, you call me by name and lead me in your love. Keep me every mindful of your presence with me on the path. Amen.
