Time flies when you have a sense of purpose. Almost two years ago, I quit the two jobs I was working because, while they were not hard jobs, neither were they life-giving in any sense. In fact, I felt suffocated by them, even though from the outside, it looked as though they were right up my alley.

For nine months, I did some deep soul searching, trying to find work that was meaningful and could actually support me. I wondered if such a thing was even possible. After a stint substitute teaching (which I adored, but it left me exhausted) I settled into a couple of independent contractor positions that I adore. They feed my soul. They provide a meaningful service. The work can be hard, but it’s worth it, and I’m grateful for it.

This isn’t everyone’s story. Lots of people are able to work day jobs they don’t love, knowing that their work makes the rest of their lives possible. Enjoyment can be found no matter what we do when our life as a whole has a sense of purpose. God calls each of us to a life of purpose and meaning. Where does your sense of purpose lie?

Loving God, keep my eyes focused on you and the life you would have me live, trusting you to take care of the rest. Amen.
