Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“And the Lord said to her, ‘Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger.’”

Two nations in her womb?!? One kid at a time was plenty for me! No wonder Rebekah was seriously questioning how she could possibly survive this crazy pregnancy. Jacob and Esau were fighting even before either of them breathed! This would be the case for most of their lives, although later on they would reconcile and be at peace.
My little brother and I used to beat on each other constantly, wreaking havoc in our house. Then at some point in high school, we just quit. The truth was we’d always adored each other and we just got tired of fighting. (It might also have had something to do with one of my mom’s decorative plates we knocked off the wall and broke when we were in our mid-teens. Oops!)
Family relationships can be contentious. We call have that one relative we’d rather not deal with. Yet God calls us into loving relationship with one another. Sometimes we have to step outside our comfort zone to extend love to those we might find unlovable. If Esau could eventually forgive Jacob for all the rotten things Jacob did to him, surely with God’s help we can find ways to get along.
Loving God, teach me to love and forgive. Amen.
