Genesis 24:1-67, The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her.

This long story is full of the traditions of early Israelite courtship. Neither Isaac nor Rebekah was directly involved in the decision that would make them husband and wife. Yet at least at one point, Rebekah is given a choice as to whether or not to follow Abraham’s servant back to meet and marry Isaac, and she chooses to do so. And when Isaac meets and marries her, the passage is clear that Isaac loved her.

Love is an action, not a feeling. We learn to love by acting in love for others. In this way, we can live peacefully with those who are different from us, those with whom we don’t agree, even those whom we don’t really care for all that much. In this way, love is also a choice. God calls us to choose those actions that create peace and harmony among all God’s children, which is to say everyone.

God, how do my choices and actions show love for others?
