Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So God created humankind in his image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

This week’s readings are all about God as a parent. Here we go back to the very, very beginning, when God, our loving parent, creates us in their own image. In this first creation story, human beings are made male and female, but I don’t believe that limits humans to these two genders. God created them male and female in God’s own image, meaning that God is both male and female, and therefore nonbinary. Which leads me to believe that absolutely any gender identity is in God’s image. And God loves each and every child of God—every single human being—unconditionally. God, our loving mother/father, will never reject us when we “come out” to them. So how can we reject anyone based on social constructs of gender, when God is beyond such things?

What are my feelings about gender identity? Am I uncomfortable with the idea that God is nonbinary? Why or why not?
