Galatians 4:1-7, Heirs with Christ

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.
— Galatians 4:6-7

I will always be a child in some way. Even when my parents are gone, I will remain their daughter. Despite being well into my fiftieth year, there are plenty of times I feel the need for parental nurturing. It often comes from close friends, who allow me to be vulnerable and in need without judgment.

And, of course, I will always be a child of God. God, the ultimate parent, the one who allows me to be vulnerable and in need more than any other. The one who gives grace when it is least deserved. The one who keeps showing up even when I push them away.

God, in Jesus, experienced this human child-ness, and knows how much we all need that loving parent even and especially when our human parents have failed us. God sends the spirit of Jesus into our hearts crying, “Mommy!” and reminding us who and whose we are.

When do I most find myself needing God’s nurturing care?
