Ezra 4:1-5, Resistance to Rebuilding the Temple

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of families in Israel said to them, “You shall have no part with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus of Persia has commanded us.”

Human beings and societies all throughout time have had difficulty accepting changes and new plans.

In my own community of St. Paul, we are currently debating whether to have collective garbage collection or not. The funny thing is, we already had one plan in place, but some groups decided they didn’t like it. So, the topic ended up in the courts and the protesters won. Now this fall there will be a referendum to decide what happens.

Change is never easy. I think what we are called to do as believers and followers of Jesus is to genuinely listen to all sides and use our god-given rationality to come to a good decision.

In theory? Sounds easy.

In truth? Oh yeah—that’s a fight waiting to happen!

God, your people has always struggled with the new. I do sometimes, too. Be with me through the changes and remind me to listen to your voice. Amen.
