Exodus 16:1-36, Manna and Quail

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.’

There is enough. This is a mantra I often have to repeat, having lived my whole life in a society that screams there isn’t every going to be enough of anything for everyone. It is work to set aside my scarcity mindset and open my eyes and heart to the truth that God provides enough in God’s good creation for everyone to flourish.

Yet God knows the hearts of us flawed humans. Even when God miraculously rained bread from heaven on the Israelites, God was well aware they would be tempted to hoard for themselves, rather than trust that there would be enough. In the case of manna, hoarding did not work—any extra gathered simply rotted away. Sadly, in the case of mammon, small groups of people have always been able to hoard unbelievable quantities of wealth and resources at the expense of the vast majority of the rest of the world.

We are called to be prophetic voices, just as Moses warned the Israelites against hoarding manna for themselves, encouraging them to trust the living God, provider of all good gifts. May we heed God’s call in our lives and work.

Gracious God, grant me the peace of knowing there is enough for me, and grant me the courage to speak up for those for whom there is not enough. Amen.
