Songs in literature never seem to work for me. It’s like the stuff J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Amazing stuff, really. I mean, the guy wrote his own languages and was quite the historian. But the songs themselves?

Meh.

It’s kinda like that in today’s scripture reading for the Narrative Lectionary (daily readings, that is). I can READ the words on the screen (or page, as it is), but I can’t HEAR the songs in my mind.

Music almost always connects with me not just for the lyrics, but also the music itself. Its tempo, phrases, and instruments used all lend to the whole musical experience. Maybe that’s why music was in worship, back then, but also today.

It moves the human spirit.

What music moves you?
