Exodus 12:33-42, The Exodus: From Rameses to Succoth

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

They baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt; it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves.

Imagine the amount of trust it would have taken for the Israelites in this situation. Think about leaving everything you’ve known your whole life and leaving so quickly you didn’t even have time to let your bread rise.

This makes me wonder about those fleeing war-torn countries—Syria, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Ukraine—with only what they could carry and no idea of where they would go, how they would live, what would happen next. The courage that would require is staggering.

As you reflect the Israelites’ flight from Egypt, may you be ever mindful of all those who are refugees, and pray for them and for the willingness to do whatever you can to help.

What is the most courageous decision or action I have ever had to make or take?
