Exodus 12:1-13, The First Passover

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord.

Ready. Set. Go. God isn’t messing around. The last plague is going to strike and when it does, God’s people need to be ready to sprint out the door and never look back. The meal that they will eat on that night—the meal that Jews share in annually to this day—was meant as sustenance for the harrowing journey ahead. It was travel food.

God calls us to be ready. Ready for God to work an amazing work in the world. Ready for our part in bringing about God’s reign in small and big ways. We are not meant to sit around indulging in big, multi-course meals, figuring someone else will do what needs to be done, or that there’s plenty of time to get our acts together. God’s reign is now and it’s time to go.

Am I dragging my feet about something God is calling me to do?
