Such a curious concept — that we were created in the image of God. I think sometimes we turn it around and believe that God is the image of us. But when we do that, we limit God only to what we can see, hear, feel, and think.
If we are created in God’s image, then we are not God, but simply a reflection of God — a tiny shimmer of the wholeness of God. We will resemble God, but God does not necessarily resemble us. We are a blurry forgery of a magnificent masterpiece. God, the colorful original — people, a black and white xerox. God, a sensational orchestra — people, a audio cassette recording.
Even in a reproduction, though, are glimpses of the original. Lines, shades, harmonies, all revealing tiny bits of the splendor of God. We can see God in our faces, hear God in our voices, feel God in our relationships. We can brush up against the original any time we allow our awareness of God’s fingerprints on all things to rise to the surface.
Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:
Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
