Colossians 2:6-19, Fullness of Life in Christ

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Do not let anyone disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking.
— Colossians 2:18

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, September 12, 2020

by R. M. Fergus, Clergy Stuff

“Puffed up without cause.” I love that. It’s such an evocative image of our cult of celebrity worship here in the states. Celebrity pastors who spout promises of wealth, and of freedom from pain and want. As if this is what Jesus’ ministry was for. So many people out there seem to think they have a handle on what God’s word really means—what qualifies a person to be a Christian. A certain way you have to think or behave. Certain things you have to accept without question.

Yeah, you see, my Jesus doesn’t promise a life of ease and he doesn’t make terms. He loves without bounds, without judgment or condemnation. And he calls us to do the same. Simple, but not easy. And so, so worth it.

Gracious God, bring me into the fullness of life that Jesus brings. Amen.
