Colossians 1:15-23, The Supremacy of Christ

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
— Colossians 1:19-20

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, July 27, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Jesus in a nutshell. There is so much to unpack in this one sentence.

Jesus as the fullness of God in a human being—a living body, showing us that bodies matter, that our body and spirit are not divided and that we can and should strive for a world in which human beings have what they need to live a flourishing life.

Jesus reconciling all things—not just human beings, but all of creation, the whole natural world, showing us that all creation matters to God and to us and we can and should strive for a livable world on which all life can flourish.

Jesus making peace through the cross—loving us and all of creation so much, knowing how we were created to be, that he was willing to go to hell and back to redeem it.

Seriously, this is my entire seminary education in two verses. Savor it today. Know that you—you personally!—matter so much, and Jesus loves you.

Gracious God, thank you for all you have done for me in Christ Jesus. Amen.
