Amos 9:11-15, The Restoration of David’s Kingdom

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

On that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen, and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old.

For all his flaws, David’s reign was seen as Israel’s golden age. And after Israel blew it again and again and again and found themselves surrounded by hostile enemies, besieged, and conquered, God promised to one day restore Israel to its former glory.

It can be easy to look back and long for idealized, bygone days. The truth of the matter is that no point in history has ever been anything like ideal. We look to God for restoration not to some imagined golden age, but to the state God intended for us—to live in interdependent community with one another, loving and serving all people, so that everyone flourishes. It is this golden age God promises in Jesus, and that promise can be found happening in the world now, even in the midst of catastrophic injustices. God calls us into active participation in bringing this promise to bear in the world, each and every day.

What does a ‘golden age’ look like to me? What do I think it means to God and God’s people?
