Acts 9:19b-22, Saul Preaches in Damascus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

All who heard him were amazed and said, ‘Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?’

Can people really change? Some people don’t think so. They believe that if you’ve done terrible things or have a challenging personality, that’s just who you are, and you should be written off. God says otherwise. Even someone like Saul, who was notorious for his persecution of the church, had an entire change of belief and behavior. But when he started preaching Jesus in Damascus, the people were like, “Wait. What?” Of course, we might say, Paul had Jesus himself come down and change him. But Jesus can change us completely, too. Sometimes it can happen dramatically, but other times it can be a slow, ongoing process. If we’re willing to be open to God, ask God to change us and let God change us, we can and do change.

How do I need to fundamentally change? How can I invite God to help me?
