“Lord, make me an instrument…” So begins the prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. I’m not supposed to go out there and proclaim my own thoughts and ideas about God in order to convince people that I’m right and they ought to think and live the way I do. Like Saul/Paul, I am to be a channel, a conduit through which God acts and speaks. I have been told over and over in seminary that it is not people who do ministry. It is God who does ministry through us. In order for that to happen, I need to clear out the channel between myself and God by removing the things that block me from God—self-will, addictions, ego, etc. Only then can I hear what it is that God is calling me to do, and do it, ministering to others in genuine love.

What is preventing me from being an instrument of God’s truth and love?
