Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Now many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles.
— Acts 5:12a

What do “signs and wonders” look like today? What are the things we as Christians do that demonstrate God’s love and power? I think we’re looking for someone to instantly heal the sick or raise the dead, literally or figuratively, as though we could prove God’s existence (to ourselves) by such miracles. But the reality of God’s presence and work in the world is far more powerful and subversive. God shows up every time we cross a boundary, reach out to another human being who is suffering, who is marginalized, who is made “other” by institutionalized oppression. God shows up when we serve without expectation of return, give without ulterior motive, stand in the place with and for the least and the lost. These actions are miraculous because they go against what the world/culture/society tells us is true, and bring to bear God’s truth. This is what makes people pay attention to the presence and power of God in the world.

Gracious God, inspire me to embody your merciful presence, so that through my actions, others may recognize your signs and wonders. Amen.
