Acts 14:8-20, Paul and Barnabas in Lystra and Derbe

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

In past generations he allowed all the nations to follow their own ways; yet he has not left himself without a witness in doing good—giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.
— Acts 14:16-17

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, May 18, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

There was a long period in my life when my faith was lacking. I was pretty sure I believed—I never did stop attending church, anyway—but I lived as though God was some distant entity and not actually present in my life in any meaningful way. It wasn’t as though, just because of my failing belief, I didn’t experience the joy and abundance of God’s creation. But I will tell you this: when I came to believe in the immediate, intimate presence of God in every minute aspect of my living and my being, my experience of God’s gifts changed entirely.

God will allow us to follow our own ways, yet continue to provide for us, as he has done for “past generations.” But a deeper connection with God, a willingness to follow God’s ways, will always move us from passive acceptance of what we don’t understand to active gratitude for all that God has given us.

Abundant God, help me to be grateful for all your gifts. Amen.
