2 Samuel 7:18-29, David’s Prayer

David was a real piece of work. Despite some truly heinous things he had done, the warfare that had raged throughout his reign, and the treachery and tragedy that had dogged his steps, God really, really loved this guy. In a rare moment of humility, David here marvels at the promise God has made to establish David’s kingdom forever, and wonders what he could have ever done to deserve it.

Of course, the answer is “nothing.” And that’s really good news for us. Now, granted, I’ve never had a rival killed so I could marry his wife. But I’m no saint. Not one of us is perfect. We are all only works in progress, even at our very best. God blesses us anyway, with joys in this life and promises of life everlasting.

Gracious God, I praise you for your generosity and boundless grace in my imperfect life. Amen.
