So here’s the basic conversation:

David: I’m going to build God a house

God: Um, no. I’m going to build you a house.

David: Uh, what’s that now?

God: Your house isn’t going to have walls. It’s going have people. Lots and lots of people. Your line will rule my people forever.

David: Oh. Okay, I guess.

Of course, David had no idea at the time that God had a slightly different plan in mind than David might have expected. Because the last in David’s line was Jesus, and Jesus now rules forever. Just like God didn’t build David an actual house, David’s descendant didn’t rule like an actual, earthly king. No matter what we can imagine, God has something better in mind for us. It might not look the way we were expecting, or even the way we think we wanted. But if we’re honest, we’ll have to recognize that what God wants for us is better than anything we could have planned for ourselves.

How has God shown up in my life in unexpected ways?
