In Jesus, we have everything we need. I’ve heard sentiments like this before, and while I agree with them on a spiritual level, I often find myself quibbling about the area of physical needs. We teach kids in Sunday School that everything we have comes from God, and that God gives us everything we need. And then we see people starving, or denied healthcare or basic human rights. So do we really automatically have everything we need in Jesus?

Truthfully, I can’t answer that question. All I can say is that I believe Jesus calls me to address those needs in any way I can. Calls me to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. If I am so lucky as to have everything needed for life, and divine communion with God and the body of Christ to boot, I will desire with all my heart to ensure that everyone has what I have.

Jesus, I have all that I need, and you above all. Direct me where you would have me act on behalf of others, that they, too, might have all they need. Amen.
