2 Kings 5:1-19a, Elisha Heals Naaman

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean.

Naaman was a Syrian, not an Israelite. This is one of the stories Jesus brought up to the people in the Synagogue to show that God’s love is for everyone, not just the Jews. Making that point almost got Jesus tossed off a cliff. But there it is. God, through Elisha and the Jordan River, cured Naaman of his leprosy simply because he asked.

It doesn’t matter if we’re in the “in crowd” or not. God’s love is not limited to anyone—not even to people who actually believe in God. We don’t get to decide who God loves, and that includes ourselves—we are loved no matter who we are, even if we think we don’t deserve it for some reason. End of story.

Do I ever find myself deciding who God should and shouldn’t care for? Do I ever feel unworthy of God’s love?
