2 Corinthians 9:1-15, The Collection for Christians at Jerusalem

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
— 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, May 29, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

“The more you give, the more you receive.” I don’t know where this old adage comes from, but it’s essentially the same as Paul’s statement about sowing and reaping. When we give cheerfully of what we have to support our neighbors, we find in that act of giving its own reward. It’s not that we somehow earn God’s love, or even buy some kind of self-satisfaction. Truly generous, selfless giving fills the heart and spirit and actually makes us want to continue to give. And when we offer our resources to strengthen others, it strengthens our whole community, and all benefit together.

Gracious God, help me to be a cheerful giver in every way. Amen.
