2 Corinthians 10:1-18, Paul Defends His Ministry

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Look at what is before your eyes. If you are confident that you belong to Christ, remind yourself of this, that just as you belong to Christ, so also do we.
— 2 Corinthians 10:7

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, May 30, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

I don’t own Jesus. I don’t get to decide what it looks like to belong to Christ. In other words, I don’t get to decide who does and who doesn’t belong. Because everyone belongs to Christ. Period. So any time I meet another human being anywhere, under any circumstances, I can’t hold myself above them in value. I love Paul’s exhortation to “look at what is before your eyes.” So often it’s not even that we judge people as worthy or unworthy, we don’t even see people in the first place. As Christians, “confident that we belong to Christ,” we are called to actually see our neighbors, and remember that they are beloved children of God and must be treated as such.

Loving God, remind me daily that every single human being is created in your image, belongs to you, and deserves my complete love and respect. Amen.
