2 Corinthians 8:1-15, Encouragement to Be Generous

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not have.

It’s not the size of the gift that determines its generosity. Witness the story of the widow’s mite—she who gave only two copper coins was considered by Jesus to have given far more than those who contributed out of their abundance. Paul reiterates this as he is collecting money for the church’s work in Jerusalem. He’s clear that he expects the Corinthians to contribute eagerly, but is also clear that they’re not expected to give “’til it hurts.” This is true in our own congregations. It takes funds to run ministries. Staff needs to be paid. Materials need to be purchased. And some folks in our congregations can afford more than others in support of these ministries. But whether we can give a little or a lot, we ought always to give with a cheerful heart.

Am I contributing what I can to my congregation? Am I doing so cheerfully?
