Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

David wasn’t unprepared for his fight with Goliath. Sure, he’d never faced off with a giant before, but he had, in the general course of caring for his father’s sheep, faced off with large, wild predators who wanted to eat said sheep. One might not think that shepherding skills transferred to giant-slaying, but there it is.

Life skills transfer. We might look at an opportunity or a challenge and immediately think we’re woefully unqualified to handle it. But when we step back an examine all the things we’ve already done in our lives, we often find that those things we’ve learned, formally and informally, give us the resources we need to rise to the occasion. Most importantly, we can invite God into our self-examination, and be open to the fact that God equips the called, so that if we are open to God’s help, we an meet any challenge that comes before us.

What are my spiritual strengths? How can I apply those to challenges in my life?
