1 Kings 18:41-46, The Drought Ends

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

At the seventh time [Elijah’s servant] said, ‘Look, a little cloud no bigger than a person’s hand is rising out of the sea.’ Then [Elijah] said, ‘Go and say to Ahab, “Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.” ’

The end of the drought was signified by a tiny little cloud. That’s how real change happens sometimes. It starts small, even insignificantly. But given time and energy, it grows until it becomes something powerful enough to alter a situation completely.

I have experienced some pretty dramatic changes in my life, completely life-altering transformations, in some cases. When I look back at them, and see where those things originated, I find that these sweeping changes began as the simple willingness to take an action, to do something different. As I have invited God into the process of changing, these little steps gained power and momentum, and something more lasting became possible. I can honestly say I am not the same person I was twenty years ago. I can point to so many ways I have changed for the better. And it all began with ‘a little cloud’ of willingness, ‘no bigger than a man’s hand.’

Have I experienced big, positive changes in my life? How did they come about? Where was God in the mix?
