Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, November 2, 2021

The Widow of Zarephath is one of my heroes. It’s a shame she, like so many other women in the Bible, is never named, as if who she is doesn’t matter. Because who she is matters a lot. She is a woman of incredible fortitude, and incredible faith. She is not even a Jew, yet when Elijah tells her that her meal and oil will not run out until the drought is over—a ridiculous claim—she trusts him, and her faith is rewarded.
I often find myself thinking about this woman when I feel depleted, when my physical or emotional resources are at a bare minimum and seem as though they’ll run out at any moment. I have experienced again and again that when I put my trust in God, there is always enough. Enough time, enough energy, enough money, enough rest. Sometimes I get scared that this time it won’t happen, and the widow reminds me where to put my faith. It’s a beautiful thing.
When has God sustained me through a time of personal drought?
