Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Friday, January 22, 2021

This is one of my absolute favorite Bible stories. I once wrote a short story using it as an allegory for spiritual drought. Such an incredible example of God’s faithfulness in times when it looks and feels utterly hopeless! And this widow! I mean, who trusts some complete stranger this completely, unless she’s completely desperate? Yet she obviously had a gut feeling about the guy, and trusted it enough to provide him hospitality in the midst of her poverty. What an amazing demonstration of faith and love.
It can be hard for us to remember sometimes that God will never forsake us. That no matter how challenging things are in our lives, hope and healing are possible, and we are never, never alone. This past year has been a tragic slog on so many levels. Can we trust that the jar of meal and the jug of oil that is our own spiritual and emotional reservoir will not fail until we can once again walk freely among each other and live in community again?
Gracious God, sustain me through my difficulties, and help me to trust that I will have enough of all that is needed. Amen.
