1 Corinthians 13:1-13, The Gift of Love

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.
— 1 Corinthians 13:12

Paul’s famous description of love seems unattainable. Patient, kind, humble, bearing and forgiving…can anyone love like this? Of course not. It’s an ideal that we can and should all strive to attain, in gratitude to God who loves us in just this way. Through that striving, we can and will grow and change. But in the end, we can’t fully understand this kind of love, or the God who loves us like this. We see “in a mirror, dimly.” A shrouded reflection of what love is, who God is, and who we are in relationship to God. Yet there is a promise, a promise not only that we will one day understand, but that in the mean time, God fully knows, understands, and loves us. No matter what we are going through, no matter our failures and struggles, we are known and loved.

What does it mean to me to be ‘fully known’ by God?
