— Ruth 3:1

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, October 17, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

My parents have always been supportive of me. Their love and guidance equipped me to be independent and happy; they provided from their own limited resources to ensure I had the tools to flourish in life. In the same way, Naomi was looking out for Ruth. As widowed women, they had no power and few options for getting by in life, yet Naomi had the intelligence and resourcefulness to come up with a plan for Naomi’s future. Naomi did this out of genuine love for Ruth, who had left everything she knew to care for her aging mother-in-law.

We are all called to look to the security and well-being of others, not just our own children. God has gifted each of us abundantly in a variety of ways, materially, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. How beautiful it is to use these gifts for the benefit of our neighbors, so that all might flourish as God intends.

Gracious God, help me to see how I may follow in the generosity of Naomi in providing security for all your beloved children. Amen.
