Romans 4:13-25, God’s Promise Realized through Faith

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.

As a kid I was terrified of authority figures, so I followed the rules and did absolutely everything I was supposed to do, which resulted in me getting called “goody two shoes” and “teacher’s pet.” Despite the negative view my peers had of me, I gained a lot of advantages through my behavior. By being doing what was required, I earned special privileges, directly and indirectly.

God doesn’t have “pets.” No one can earn God’s love by following a bunch of rules. Instead, God’s makes promises to us simply because we have faith. Paul tells us that if we could work our way into God’s good graces, then there would be no point to faith, so there would be no promises. Paul can be a bit dense (a bit?!?) but for me today the message is simple. I will turn to God in faith and gratitude and not waste my time trying to be perfect.

Promising God, relieve me of the bondage of perfectionism, so that I can simply accept your love and grace. Amen.
