Romans 12:1-8, The New Life in Christ

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

Humility. It is the single most important ingredient in any relationship, without exception. Almost every interpersonal conflict can be traced back to its lack in one or more of the people involved. Humility is not being a door mat. It’s not subjecting yourself to humiliation. Quite the contrary. But it is an honest acknowledgement of your total equality in value to every other human being—neither more nor less. Paul is exhorting the Roman Christians to develop humility: to not see themselves as better, more gifted, more intelligent, more important to the burgeoning church than anyone else. And these words are still critical for us to hear today in our own church communities where it’s so easy to overvalue certain skills and abilities and undervalue others. Where we can be drawn into overserving or underserving to our own detriment based on how we perceive our own value. You—yes you—matter, and God invites you to recognized that you are a vital part of the Body of Christ.

Do I tend to overvalue or undervalue my gifts to my faith community?
