Say what you want about those who genuinely live a life of faithful obedience, but one thing you cannot say is that they live droll, unhappy lives. Several members of my parish I served in western North Dakota come to mind. These were real “salt of the earth” folk who passionately lived to embody the infinite love of Jesus Christ as best they could.

The main common denominator in each of their lives is that they continually had a sense of joy undergirding every moment of their days. It’s not that they weren’t ever sad, or somehow that they were sinless like Jesus; they simply lived within an ever-reaching radiance of God’s own joy.

Perhaps, you, too, know such people in your life. Or perhaps you yourself ARE one of those people.

I’m not. It’s not my gift. But I, too, am called to feel the oil of gladness for being counted among God’s people. And it’s important that I find reminders of God’s own joy.

How much do you exhibit the Oil of Gladness in your life?
