My son has been taking guitar lessons for a little over two years now. His mother, my wife Carol, grew up with music in her soul; she’s an accomplished pianist. Evidently, my son gets it from his mother, because although I enjoy music, I’m not the best performer there is. Plus, I play the bagpipes! (Who wants to listen to them very long?!)
The amazing thing I’ve noticed with Nathan, is that when he plays his guitar and begins to pluck out tunes he likes, I see a certain sense of joy in his eyes. Music can do that, can’t it? There’s just something about music that makes it wonderful. It seeps into your soul.
The Psalmist knew that music was like this. David, it’s said, enjoyed playing the harp. One thing for sure, music and worship of God have always been holy practices that belong together. How we integrate them is sometimes quite controversial though. What are we supposed to play in church? What can we NOT play in church?
What do you think?
Is music instrumental to worship? (Yes, pun intended.) What music should worship communities embrace?
