Recently, my father had a scary brush with death. He got pneumonia and it progressed to the point that he ended up in the ICU for a couple of weeks. He’s still not at 100%, but definitely (and thankfully) is on the mend now.
The whole experience for me was terrifying, too. I hear so much of OTHER people’s parents passing on, and I think, “That’s sad.” But I never seem to reflect that this, too, will happen to me one day. And for my children, and their children too.
Mortality is a tough thing, not because it’s scary thinking about death (at least for me). I think it’s most scary because we will be separated from the ones we love.
Thanks be to God, then, that our inheritance is not only the nations and those who live now, but also those who have gone to be with God. The promise that brings hope to me is one that each of us will never have to be alone, separated from God.
In God, we are all Sons and Daughters of the Infinite One, the One who created, redeemed and sustained us.
