Psalm 22:1-2, 14-21, Abandonment

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
— Psalm 22:1

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, March 27, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

It’s okay to lament. Even Jesus, dying on the cross, cried out these words from Psalm 22. There are times when I feel like I have been abandoned, when nothing makes sense, and I can’t see God anywhere. These days, when I look at the state of the world, especially the climate crisis, I find myself deep in doubt about God’s promises to care for us, to deliver us. I know I am not alone.

But I also know that in those moments when I feel utterly abandoned by God, God is right there, holding me, experiencing the depth of my pain and fear right along with me. And when I cry out my lament, I am heard, whether I believe it or not in the moment. It is okay to lament and feel lost. God is there.

What things in my life do I need to lament?
