Psalm 122, Psalm

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Jerusalem—built as a city
that is bound firmly together.

The irony of the scripture reading today is that it’s hardly a city “bound firmly together.” In fact, Jerusalem seems a prime candidate instead as coming apart at the seams. So many faiths are represented in the city. So many people consider it the center of their faith.

At the same time, faith persists. No matter what atrocities that have been committed in the name of religion, still there is a center which rotates around the truth of God’s word speaking to the human heart. Peace, at its center.

Perhaps today’s Psalm stirs you to a peace that perhaps might not yet be realized, but one which is worth dreaming about.

God, grant me peace today. Grant peace for the whole world, your new Jerusalem. Amen.
