Psalm 121, Psalm of Trust

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
— Psalm 121:1-2

Last summer, I saw the Rocky Mountains for the first time. I could totally see why people have always worshiped God on mountains, and why, if someone were in trouble, they would look to the hills to seek for their help, as the Psalmist writes. I certainly felt the presence of God in that majestic landscape, and was aware of “the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

Of course, the mountains aren’t God, and God’s help doesn’t have to come from some higher elevation. This beautiful hymn of trust is about the sure knowledge that when we are in trouble, we need only look to the Lord for strength, guidance, wisdom and power. We can take comfort in the majesty of God, for if God made heaven and earth, God can certainly help us in our need.

Loving God, remind me that you are always with me and will aid me in my times of trouble. Amen.
