Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Ouch. Tagged again. We all think we’re right all the time, not least of all me. But, of course, not everyone can be right all the time or no one would ever disagree on anything. And we all know that’s not the case!
One of the practices I’ve found valuable is to carefully examine my motives before taking any significant actions in my life (or sometimes, unfortunately, to examine them after I’ve done something without thinking). Why would I do this? What do I get out of it? Is it to the benefit of anyone other than myself? Is it to the detriment of others in favor of myself?
When I’m honest with myself about my motives, I’m much less likely to hurt others by my actions. If I’ve acted without thinking (and the damage is done), I get a first-hand example of this Proverb—God knows what my motives were, and now it’s up to me to make things right.
Forgiving God, keep me ever mindful what is in my heart, that my actions remain loving and kind. Amen.
