Matthew 8:18-27, Miracles of Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And they went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm.

There’s nothing quite as terrifying as a summer storm. Still, they are wonderfully beautiful, too, in their own way. I love especially when the rain just gushes out of the sky. I can’t help but wonder how the air can hold that much moisture!

But storms are very scary. They can take your life.

Imagine how it must have been for the disciples; they weren’t just in the middle of a storm—they were in the middle of a storm, out in the middle of the lake, standing on a rickety fishing boat!

Jesus’ rebuke of the disciples fear I believe isn’t so much of a chiding as it is an assurance that God will always be there, whether in a storm or within fair weather.

God, thank you for storms, but thank you, too, for calming my wild and turbulent heart.
