Matthew 13:13-23, Parable of Sower Explained

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.
— Matthew 13:22

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, January 25, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

American soil is full of thorns. From infancy, we are raised to be obsessed with the cares of the world and the lure of wealth. We are taught in school that our entire purpose is to become faithful consumers, working to achieve the highest possible income so we can spend money and “be happy.” We are taught by every single form of media that having “things” is the way to this happiness. We are a people utterly lost: the cares of the world and the lure of wealth has choked the Word, and it yields nothing.

Jesus calls us out of this way of being, and promises us a life more abundant and joyful than anything the world can offer us.

God, remove the thorns that keep me from finding life abundant in you. Amen.
