Matthew 12:22-32, Teachings of Jesus "A House Divided"

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

In today’s story, we hear how the rulers once again wished to discredit Jesus’ good work for their own gain. There is one major difference, though, we read in today’s text.

In this story, Jesus basically says: “Fine. You want to discredit me or curse me? Go right ahead. But the moment you look at God’s work and say, ‘This is the work of demons’ . . . well, watch out!”

And he’s right!

Believers who gather around God’s Word and sacraments should remember this—we cannot be divided against each other, nor can we be divided against those who are doing good things, even though they do not follow our agenda or express themselves theologically the same as us.

Don’t “diss” the Spirit, baby.
