Mark 9:38-41, Another Exorcist

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

The more I grow in faith (and years), the more I believe that ones faith is meant to live out to make it real. The interesting thing coming from an ELCA Lutheran background is that I truly believe this has nothing to do with “works righteousness.” Instead, it means that in real action and real acts we make our faith real . . . not only to God, but to ourselves.

It has nothing to do with justification, that’s something else.

Instead, what it means is that real belief is where the rubber meets the road. This is what I believe Jesus was addressing when the disciples informed him of someone else casting out demons in his name.

A section of the movie Kingdom of Heaven comes to mind when one of the crusaders was informing the newly anointed duke of a castle (Orlando Bloom) how he “took no stock in religion, but in true spirituality.”

Here, watch it yourself. It’s powerful.
