Mark 9:14-29, The Healing of a Boy with a Spirit

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I believe; help my unbelief!
— Mark 9:24b

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, February 22, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

I so relate to the father in this story. His son is suffering and he is told he only has to believe for the boy to be made well. And this is his response, exclamation point and all.

As the mother of special needs kids, I’ve had to let go of a lot of expectations, accept that my children won’t do all the things other “normal” kids will do. I can be okay with it for a while, be able to celebrate them as they are, and then out of nowhere, a single, sometimes trivial event will send me crashing back into grief.

I know that God is parenting my kids right along with me, that God has their backs and loves them even more than I do. I know that I have to believe that no matter what their futures look like, they will be “okay.” Yet some days all I can do is cry out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And Jesus tells me that is enough.

Where do I need God’s help believing in God’s power?
