Mark 16:8, The Shorter Ending of Mark

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

It wasn’t until I entered seminary that I knew that Mark actually has two different endings. Some might say that it’s speculation and that no one really knows where the ancient Gospel text ended. Sure. Fine.

I still think that this ending, as weird as it is, makes a solid impression about the fearful idea that God embodied a human being as the person of Jesus of Nazareth, died a real human death (and a bloody one), and was raised from the grave.

If there’s anything that should make you afraid, it’s the truth of the claim that Jesus is risen. Who knows where he is now, other than radically changing the world for the better for God.

Boo!

Your empty tomb strikes fear in our hearts, God. Calm my fearful impulse to run, and instead make me bold to proclaim that you live, always. Amen.
