Mob mentality is a dangerous thing. Here was a group of everyday people, devout Jews in town to celebrate their highest holy day. People who were probably in every other way good, upstanding folks just going about their business. But they were stirred up by people in power with an agenda, whipped into a frenzy by a few, vocal leaders acting out of fear of losing their privilege. Sound familiar?

God calls us to be voices of compassionate reason, willing to risk in order to speak up against the massive tide of hatefulness being spouted in our current context. We can’t get swept up into the polarization that continues to drive us apart, or we become just one more voice in the crowd shouting, “Crucify him!”

How can I be a voice for reconciliation in my community?
