Mark 11:20-26, The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

Earlier in this passage, Jesus says we can move a mountain if we have even the tiniest bit of faith. And then it ends with this instruction about forgiving. Sometimes forgiving someone—or forgiving ourselves—is a more formidable task than moving a mountain. It requires an incredible amount of faith to trust that God is really in charge and that it’s not up to us to change another person’s behavior. It requires faith to recognize that forgiveness is not the same as condoning bad behavior and to trust that we are worthy of healthy boundaries. It requires faith to believe that we ourselves deserve forgiveness when we have done things we’re not proud of.

Yet Jesus promises us that whatever we ask in his name will be given to us. Thus if we ask for God’s help to forgive ourselves and others, we can receive grace enough, and faith enough, to do just that.

Is there someone I need God’s help to forgive?
