Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

This is about humility, I think. If we’re completely self-reliant, if we believe at depth that we’re the ones who are calling the shots in our lives and we’ve earned everything we have and are fully independent, what need to we have to care about anyone else, much less some higher power we aren’t crediting with our success?
If, on the other hand, we recognize our fundamental interdependence with creation, our need for other people and the natural world, we live in a state of gratitude for all those things outside ourselves on which our very existence depends.
So long as Simon believes he is, all on his own, better than the weeping woman, he will not be able to receive the life-transforming love of God, simply because he thinks he doesn’t need it. It is only when we acknowledge that all we have and all we are is a gift that love pours out of us, overflowing, to the world around us—we simply cannot keep it to ourselves.
How can I show my gratitude to God in love for someone else today?
